The community is invited to celebrate the life of legendary mixed martial arts (MMA) coach Shawn "The Coach" Tompkins on Friday, Oct. 28, 2011. The event, which includes guest speakers, music, food, beverages and a silent auction, is from 6 to 8 p.m. at the TapouT Training Center located at 4040 W. Hacienda Avenue in Las Vegas. Tompkins, 37, was a pioneer in MMA coaching who inspired countless athletes and fans. He passed in his sleep on Aug. 14.
Special guests include Sam Stout and Mark Hominick, who both trained under Tompkins and currently fight in the UFC, Bas Rutten, former UFC heavyweight champion, and Mike Straka, television journalist and creator of the MMA news and entertainment program "FOX Fight Game."
Commissioners from the Mountain West and Conference USA will meet with the head of the Big East Conference about forming a 28-32 team super conference.
The proposed merger is an attempt to gain automatic qualifier status for the Bowl Championship Series.
Mountain West commissioner, Craig Thompson, and Conference USA's Britton Banowsky will head to New York to make the super conference to Big East Conference commissioner, John Marinatto.
Well, it's official. Broncos fans have decided who the new starting messiah quarterback of the future will be.
His name is Tim Tebow and he fulfilled their prophecy by rising after three and a half bad quarters to lead them to the promise land.
Or so it seems with this parody of Nicki Minaj's Super Bass and the billboards that Denver fans are willing to take the time and money to produce for a guy who completes 45.9% of his passes.
For the purposes of balancing this post and to better represent the polarizing effects of Tim Tebow outside of Denver, here's a rational opinion on the Mile High Savior:
Rick Pitino is still seething over the departure of Syracuse and Pittsburgh to the ACC. The Louisville coach can't understand why the two basketball powers left the Big East. He says it's like screwing over a woman you've been with for years.
"My problem is not them leaving," he said. "My problem is you did it in 48 hours. Don't run away with a girl after one date when you've been dating someone else for three or four years. You've been dating this woman for 30 years, show a little respect."
When he's not doing play-by-play for the NFL Network, Bryant Gumbel is brilliant and probably the only media member with an ego big enough to rival David Stern's.
That said, he is absolutely on the mark with his comments on the most recent "Real Sports' on HBO. In describing Stern's constant goal of belittling everyone around him (0:38 mark), Gumbel calls the NBA commish "a modern day plantation overseer."
We assume "Don David Sternio" will respond with some sort of cryptic threat as he did with Stan Van Gundy. SVG and Gumbel should be sleeping with the fishes before 2012 hits.
