Bush, Chevelle and Filter Review by Big Mex

Bush, Chevelle, & Filter

Like Filter, I’ll dive right in and give my thoughts of the show last night at The Joint. I guess the main reason Filter played, mostly, familiar or “hit” songs is because they only had an 8 song set list. Out of the 8 songs, only 2 were off their 2010 release The Trouble With Angels. Richard Patrick had 2 memorable moments, the first was when they went into “Hey Man Nice Shot”, he thanked “KOMP 92.3 for blowing up this song”. The second one I’ll get to in my “BTW Moment”. All in all, Filter was good.

Chevelle, whom I had never seen before was even more impressive than Filter. The main reason I had never really had the desire to see Chevelle was because I had heard their stage presence was pretty boring. But after hanging with Pete, Dean, & Sam earlier in the afternoon and hearing their new song Face To The Floor, I decided to make an effort to finally see these guys. I was extremely impressed with both, their song selection and stage presence. I was amazed at how big of a sound the 3 guys have, they sound as if they should have 4 or 5 guys in the band. I love how low Dean’s bass sound is and the double bass of Pete’s drumming give Chevelle that “big sound”. I’m sure they will be coming back through LV soon, their 6th album (no title yet) is set to be released 12/6/11.

I hadn’t seen Bush since the Golden State album tour in, I believe, ’01. When I saw them, I was pretty impressed because I’m not really into the Pop Rock scene. This was the first time I had seen this version of Bush (Chris Traynor – guitar & Corey Britz – bass). In case you recognize the name Chris Traynor, he was founding member of Orange 9mm and was also in the band Helmet and Institute with Gavin Rossdale. The set was great and their presence was good. I did like Bush, but in all honesty. The most memorable was Chevelle, the night definitely belonged to them.

BTW Moment
Richard Patrick’s 2nd most memorable moment was when, at the end of Filter’s set, he says: “Come out there (merch booth) and buy something! If you buy it, I’ll sign it! If you feed my kids, I’ll sign whatever you want!”….Aaaaawkward. Epic fail Rich.
